Happy Christmas Eve Eve!! Today I’m sharing my review of Juno Dawson’s latest YA novel Stay Another Day…. Anyone else hearing East 17 right now 😂😂
When three very different siblings, Fern, Rowan and Willow, go home for a Christmas reunion at their family home in Edinburgh, it’s not long before some VERY BIG SECRETS threaten their cosy holiday …
The McAllister house on Arboretum Road has seen 120 Christmases since its completion.
This year, FERN is bringing her gorgeous boyfriend home and she wants everything to be perfect.
But her twin brother ROWAN would rather go on the pull than pull crackers with the family.
And their younger sister WILLOW is terrified of Christmas Day.
With FOUR sleeps till Christmas,
THREE secretive siblings,
TWO hot houseguests,
And ONE juicy secret …
This Christmas, there will be some BIG surprises under the tree.
Sometimes at Christmas, you don’t get what you want, you get what you need…
Family secrets, chance encounters and festive traditions collide in this juicy Christmas treat from Juno Dawson.
What Did I Think?
Families are complicated. No more than the McAllister family who are coming together for the festive season. The previous Christmas has been a bit of a non starter with Willow receiving treatment for an eating disorder and Rowan in France bartending avoiding the drama.
So this year, Rowan has brought home friend Syd and Fern her boyfriend Thom. One big happy family plus extras under the one roof. What could possibly go wrong?!
The story is told with each chapter coming from a different sibling. Hearing the three very unique voices from these unique characters added to the tension of this domestic tale. I loved the way the Christmas Day narrative is different to the rest of the chapters, told in the third person almost like there is an observer watching the Macallister family.
Stay Another Day may be set at Christmas but it’s far from a Christmassy read. For a YA read, it is hard hitting. It covers off mental health, infidelity, eating disorders as well as the usual family tensions that can appear when students can return home. I’ll be reading more from Juno Dawson in 2022 me thinks!
