Happy “Hump” Day!! As the second UK lockdown is looming, how’s about a book for you to add to your reading pile? What about Fifteen Coffins by Tony J Forder?
Big thanks to the fabulous Sarah Hardy of Book On The Bright Side Publicity for inviting me on the blog tour and for my e-copy of Fifteen Coffins.
From the bestselling author of the DI Bliss series comes an enthralling mystery thriller.
The truth can set you free – or bury you.
When FBI Agent Sydney Merlot returns to her home town in northern California to wind down her late father’s PI business, she soon finds herself on the wrong side of the aftermath of a high school shooting.
Sydney’s childhood friend – who is now county sheriff – plus the local PD, the mayor’s office, and most of the town’s inhabitants, are convinced the horror ended when the gunman was killed. Now they just want to be left alone to mourn. But Sydney has other ideas – and she is not alone.
While having to work through her own personal grief, Sydney is openly intimidated and receives anonymous threats. After discovering she is under surveillance, she begins to fear for her life. During her investigation she gains several allies, but as the days pass, Sydney doesn’t know who to trust, and which new friends might actually turn out to be foes…
What Did I Think?
Where do I start? Fifteen Coffins is about a mass shooting at a school in the states. I’ll admit, every time I hear about such an incident on the news my heart breaks. Kids with their futures ahead of them gunned down by a fellow student indiscriminately.
But the shooting at Moon Falls High is different. The shooter isn’t your typical shooter and his father is unwilling to accept that his son Kevin was the criminal. Looking for a PI to take his case, he meets Sydney Merlot, FBI agent and daughter of the late Sidney Merlot PI and she agrees to take his case. Does she believe the grieving father or is her judgment clouded by her own grief?
I loved Sydney. She’s ballsy. Well you kind of have to be being FBI but she’s confident and not to be trifled with. She operates in a very grey area to get what she needs. Her relationship with Lowe, the sheriff is an interesting one. There was brief sparks from times gone past but this relationship is platonic with a splash of friction. Sydney threatens Lowe’s status as sheriff but he knows truth must prevail.
This is my first encounter of Forder’s writing and I’ve really enjoyed it. The story is packed with intrigue, I had sufficient doubt in Kevin’s capabilities to perform the atrocities at the high school but I still questioned everything. The twists and turns Forder has woven into the tale kept me hooked to the end.
