Diary of An Adorable Fat Girl by Bernice Bloom @Bernice1Bloom #bookreview

Happy Saturday everyone! Today I’m sharing my thoughts on the first in the Adorable Fat Girl series from Bernice Bloom.

Many of you know, I’m a paid up member of Slimming World and over the years, me and my weight have been at odds with each other. So reading the blurb for this novella piqued my interest. This book is currently free to download through Amazon UK, Kobo and iBooks.

The Blurb

Mary Brown is funny, gorgeous and bonkers. She’s also about six stone overweight. When she realises she can’t cross her legs, has trouble bending over to tie her shoelaces without wheezing like an elderly chain-smoker, and discovers that even her hands and feet look fat, it’s time to take action. But what action? She’s tried every diet under the sun.

This series is the hysterical story of what happens when Mary joins ‘Fat Club’ where she meets a cast of funny characters and one particular man who catches her eye. As the series develops, Mary goes off on a whole load of adventures. Join her for all of them.

The stories are laugh-out-loud funny and will resonate with anyone who has dieted, tried to keep up with any sort of exercise programme or spent 10 minutes in a changing room trying to extricate herself from a way too-small garment that she ambitiously tried on and is now completely stuck in.

What Did I Think?

It doesn’t matter what size you are if you feel uncomfortable and hate your body

Everyone wanting to lose weight has a trigger to make you do something about it; mine … this last time round? It was buying a size 18 pair of elasticated waist jeggings that still gave me a muffin top but I refused to buy a size 20. For Mary… it was crossing her legs properly…

I really identified with Mary. I’ve been where she is, the binge eating to find comfort, the binge eating when you’re happy… just eating far too much… and then that nervousness of walking into a room of strangers and then having to talk about why you couldn’t control your eating. Bloom really got that bang on the nose!

Liz’s enthusiasm reminds me of my own Slimming World consultant. The eagerness to support and understand why. I’ve been to different slimming groups and the person stood at the front makes a difference as to whether you succeed along with the support of your fellow group members and Mary really has the right support around her.

You can’t deny that you’re a food addict.

Bloom has created a short entertaining start to a series I know I’ll be coming back to again and again. At 76 pages, I swept through my first meeting with Mary and her friend in just over an hour. A great little realistic escape from the goings on around me.
