Woo hoo!!! There is nothing better than kicking the week off in style and a trip to Black Rock Falls fits the bill! And what’s better is I’m sharing the #BooksOnTour day with my fellow Kane and Alton fanatic Zoe over at ZooLoo’s Book Diary.
A massive thank you to the fabulous Noelle Holten for inviting me to join the #BooksOnTour fun and to Bookouture for my e-copy of Her Shallow Grave which I received through Netgalley. I also purchased my own e-copy from Amazon.
She runs her trembling fingers over the dark, damp walls surrounding her. Above her head, she hears heavy footsteps. She knows she has nowhere to hide and as the door to the cellar is flung open, she finally sees his face.
It’s winter in Black Rock Falls and, as tourists flock to the small town to take in the snowy mountain peaks, one visitor makes a sickening discovery. The frozen body of a young woman hangs from a tree on the outskirts of town. Detective Jenna Alton is called in to investigate.
Jenna’s stomach turns as she surveys the ice-cold remains, and she’s soon alerted to similar burial sites nearby. With no missing persons reported, Jenna and her deputy, David Kane, fear Black Rock Falls is being used as a dumping ground for bodies.
As the body count mounts up, Jenna is more determined than ever to find the person responsible. But as she tries to catch the killer out, he outsmarts her once again and Jenna begins to wonder if he knows her next move. Could he be closer to her than she thinks?
When the investigation takes Jenna to a homeless shelter right in the heart of the community, she fears for the life of a woman who hasn’t been seen for a few days. It’s clear the killer is beginning to escalate, so Jenna ramps up the investigation and puts herself in unthinkable danger. Can she catch the murderer off guard, or does he already know she’s on her way? Has Jenna finally met a killer she can’t catch?
If you like Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot, you will love this thrilling new book from bestselling crime author D.K. Hood.
**Each Kane and Alton book can be read as part of the series or as a standalone**
What Did I Think?
“Black Rock Falls, perfect one day, deadly snowscape the next.”
It’s not just the snowscape that’s deadly in Black Rock Falls. This may be my ninth trip to this Montana town but I know fully well that people in the vicinity can not be trusted!! It doesn’t feel two books since Dave Kane crashed into Jenna Alton’s life when yes it was the middle of winter but each book in this series is a rollercoaster of excitement, murder and intrigue!
I love the familiarity of Black Rock Falls.. well this is book 9 😱😱 I am desperate to go to Aunt Betty’s for pancakes and pie!! But I’d only be going as a third wheel with Jenna and Kane. Visitors to Black Rock Falls don’t have a high mortality rate in Her Shallow Grave so I want the best bodyguards this town has to offer. I’ve loved this pairing from the off and Her Shallow Grave intensifies this relationship.
“Black Rock Falls—where no one is who he seems?”
Preacher is a nutter, totally delusional and a perv to boot. But the big question is who is he?! As I read, all I could picture was Dominic Cooper playing Jesse Custer in the Sam Catlin/Evan Goldberg/Seth Rogen adaptation of the Vertigo comic books… but that was totally the wrong image to have. Hood’s Preacher is super sinister and one that made me feel seriously unnerved for the females on Black Rock Falls.
As the story developed and the team get their teeth into finding this misnamed man of God, I felt my chest tighten. Had the team met their match this time? Would their 100% crime solving rate be over? I had faith that the twisted man would get his comeuppance but at what cost?! This slippery soul is determinedly stay under the radar but still get his time in the spotlight … kind of like a seriously warped version of Banksy…. actually maybe not…
Hood has written yet another brilliant addition to this series. Black Rock Falls must be the most unfortunate town in America but it’s got the best sheriff’s department looking after it. This series just keeps getting better and better! Can’t wait for book 10!!!
