keep your friends closec

I’m thrilled to be closing the blog tour for June Taylor’s Keep Your Friends Close.  June is a Leeds author who I’ve known for a couple of years now after the lovely Jo Robertson of My Chestnut Reading Tree introduced us.  Since then, we’ve run into each other at various bookish events in the area.

Big thanks to June and Emma Welton of damppebbles blog tours for inviting me on the blog tour and to Killer Reads for my copy of Keep Your Friends Close.

The Blurb

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer…

An addictive and shocking psychological thriller, full of twists you won’t see coming, perfect for fans of FRIEND REQUEST by Laura Marshall.

A friend who won’t let you escape.

When Karin is taken on a romantic break by her loving partner Aaron, she can’t wait for him to propose. But her surprise weekend quickly becomes a nightmare from which she may never escape.

Who wants everything you have.

They are staying by the beach at the Midland – a grand hotel where Karin used to work. And where Karin’s dangerous and obsessive ex, whom she has been trying to leave behind for years, is waiting patiently for her to return.

Who won’t stop until your life is in ruins.

Now all of Karin’s darkest secrets are being dragged into the light and her friends are turning against her. When one of them is murdered, Karin begins to realise just how treacherous relationships can be…

What Did I Think?

When I started Keep Your Friends Close, I was unnerved from the start. Karin is a woman of secrets with a past she doesn’t want to share with her man and the more I read, I could see why. But we all know, secrets are dangerous.

I loved the local references to Leeds and Morecambe. Living just outside Leeds and having spent a few years living in Lancaster, I felt totally immersed in the familiar backdrop of these two places that have formed part of me.

There is a poetic feel to Ms Taylor’s descriptions but it’s not obtrusive. It felt right. It built a perfect picture for me, inspiring my imagination for those fictitious places in the familiar locale and these characters I was reading about.

The deeper I delved into Karin’s life, the more confused my emotions got. Who really was looking out for her best interest? I mistrusted everyone, even Karin herself as Keep Your Friends Close reaches it’s climatic end. Ms Taylor successfully interwove complex threads which then came together at the end as Karin finally found who her friends really were.

If you enjoy your psychological thrillers, I highly recommend giving Keep Your Friends Close a read.
