Sometimes your first love won’t let you go…
Lou Wandsworth is used to being headline news as, aged fourteen, she ran away to France with her 31-year-old teacher, Mike Hughes.
Now 32, Lou’s life is in tatters – and she resolves to return home to confront Mike for the damage he has caused. But she soon finds that Mike is unchanged, and is focussing his attention on 13-year-old Chloe Meadows.
Determined to make sure that history doesn’t repeat itself, Lou decides to take matters into her own hands. But Mike is a predator of the worst kind, and as she tries to bring him to justice, it’s clear that Lou could once again become his prey…
What Did I Think?
Everyone remembers their first love, their first time. But most don’t leave the lasting impression that Lou Wandsworth has had to live with. Since her first love of Mike Hughes, she’s been unlucky in love. Relationships not lasting and it’s the same with Ben, her most recent man. But this time she bolts to her childhood town to sort out her family home after her dad’s recent demise and to hide. This escape dredges up old memories and Lou can’t help but go looking for Mike. And what a can of worms that turns out to be!
Ms Taylor has written her take on the stories you read in the press of a teacher disappearing with one of their students. Instead of stopping when the adult is apprehended, she takes her characters into the future to face the aftermath and the long term effects of the very scary world of child grooming. The way Ms Taylor portrayed Lou’s mental state as she returned to her childhood abode felt very real – who wouldn’t be drawn back towards a person who had has such an impact on their adolescent life. Who wouldn’t be apprehensive about the first encounter after so many years particularly when that person had abused your trust and that of those around you.
I thought all the characters were perfectly crafted. I really felt for Lou, I hated Mike, I was desperate to help Cleo. And who is Wendy???? My mind jumped between the possibilities of who she was.
I love Ms Taylor’s writing and this is no exception. I was glued to the story swallowing up the words as quickly as I could. I needed to know whether Lou would get peace and whether Mike would get his comeuppance? If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers, you need to add this pacey read to your reading pile!!
Don’t forget to catch all the other fabulous posts on the blog tour!
